Exam Schedule

There will be two midterm exams and a final exam as follows:

First Midterm
Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 8am
Location: Madhu and Lubkin in Hoyt. Hozoori and Sumpter in Lower Strong.
Topics: Through inverse of a square matrix, Ch. 2.6. This is webwork 5.
Second Midterm
Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 8am
Location: Madhu and Lubkin in Hoyt. Hozoori and Sumpter in Lower Strong.
Topics: The focus will be on Chapter 3, sections 3.1-3 (3.4 is a nice summary) and Chapter 4, 4.1-4.6, 4.8 and 4.9. The webwork material covered will be Sets 6-9, and Homeworks #5-8. Older material may be needed to answer questions on the midterm, so the exam is cummulative in that sense.
Final Exam
May 5, 2024
Location: Madhu and Lubkin in Hoyt. Hozoori and Sumpter in Lower Strong.
The Final will consist of two parts, Part A (10 pts) covering the material of the midterms and Part B (20 pts) covering the material since midterm 2. Part A can be used to replace your worst midterm score (but not both) if it is better. It always counts for the final score so must be taken even if one does not need to replace a midterm score.

Grading Info:

Your grade for the course will be based on your performance on exams, quizzes and homework:

  • Two Midterm Exams 20% each.
  • Final Exam 30%
  • 14 WeBWorK assignments 25%
  • Best 9 out of 12 Written Homework assignments 5% (0.56% each)

Because 3 of 9 homeowrk assignments will be dropped, late assignments–even with a grade reduction–will not be accepted. Late assignment grading is burdensome to the graders.

Because of the generous exam score replacement policy above and the fact that webwork offers unlimited attempts for each problem, a curve is often not necessary in Math 165.

We have the following brackets.

  • If you earn 92 or more total points, you will receive an A.
  • If you earn 90 or more total points, you will receive at least an A-.
  • If you earn 88 or more total points, you will receive at least a B+.
  • If you earn 82 or more total points, you will receive at least a B.
  • If you earn 80 or more total points, you will receive at least a B-.
  • If you earn 78 or more total points, you will receive at least a C+.
  • If you earn 72 or more total points, you will receive at least a C.
  • If you earn 70 or more total points, you will receive at least a C-.
  • If you earn 60 or more total points, you will pass the course. (D+ and D- grades are not awarded.)

Again because of the exam replacement policy, make-ups are not offered. Your missed exam score will be replaced with your Final Part A score. If a student misses a midterm whether it be for medical or other reason, they would be expected to use Part A of the final as its replacement.

FYI: Calculators, other electronic devices (iPhone, smart watches, etc.,) notes, and cheat sheets are not permitted during exams.
