“Calculus: Early Transcendentals (9th edition)” by James Stewart will be the textbook that we follow.

Lectures are from May 20 to June 26 (the day before final exam) Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs 9:00 AM- 11:15 AM (June 6 lecture time for midterm)

Week of May 20 (week 1)

Topics: Integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (Review); Areas between Curves, Volumes; The Shell Method; Integration by Parts; Trigonometric Integrals; Trigonometric Substitutions.

Monday: Review Chapter 5.

Tuesday: A brief intro to integration by parts (needed for Webwork 1 somewhere), 6.1-6.4

Wednesday: A few more examples in Chapter 6, 6.5

Thursday: 7.1-7.3

No Webwork set is due this week but you should start exploring it.

Week of May 27 (week 2)

Topics: More integration by parts and Trigonometric integral/substitutions; Integration of Rational functions by Partial fractions; Improper Integrals; Arc length

No class Monday May 27 (Memorial Day)

Tuesday: 7.3-7.4, intro to improper integral

Wednesday: improper integral I

Thursday, improper integral II (7.8), intro to arc length (8.1)

Week of June 3 (week 3)

Monday: arc length

Tuesday and Wednesday: review for midterm

Week of June 10 (week 4)

Monday: bride remark on midterm; Parametric curves and intro to polar coordinate system (10.1-10.3).

Tuesday: more polar coordinate (around 10.3)

Wednesday: finishing up polar coordinate (around 10.4). Feynmann’s trick and a counterexample showing that limit in general does not commute with integration.

Thursday: From limit of sequence to limit of summation.

Week of June 17 (week 5)

More sum. power series. Taylor expansion

Monday: Taylor expansion continued.

Tuesday and Wednesday review sessions
